New Council set to protect childrens interests online 29/09/2008

The Labour Government continues to highlight the need for more safety for children while they use the internet. Therefore, a new ‘UK Council for Child Internet Safety’ is being set up by the DCSF (Ed Balls) and Home Office (Jacqui Smith) to combat cyber-bullying, inappropriate websites and check online marketing/advertising.

“Access for all” is the European strapline for broadband internet, and the target is all Europeans will have it by 2010. This will be a tall order considering the digital divide that exists in so many countries especially those who will find it difficult to even afford broadband in the first place.

Hassle, Hassle, Hassle 17/09/2008

Here’s a neat little application from MySocietyHassleMe is a website where you can enter your email address, a period of time and some text to nag yourself to do something.  HassleMe will then send you the nags at roughly the time periods you tell it.  This means that you never quite know when you will receive the email.  The theory is that this semi-randomness makes the nag more effective.

This was coded by Chris Lightfoot, a young member of MySociety who died.  The team have now taken this over and have implemented the other part of HassleMe which is publishing what people are hassling themselves about and it makes for fascinating reading.  Either that or I’m one sad, nosy geek.

Virtual deep sea diving 10/09/2008

Due to the worrying decay of a lot of underwater archaeological sites due to looting, trawling activity and environmental erosion, new virtual software has been produced to enable these places to be preserved for ever. It will enable anyone, regardless of deep sea diving experience, to visit sunken shipwrecks and other treasures at the bottom of the sea.
