Find out how an iphone ap. is helping improve the city 27/05/2011

A free iphone ap. that has been developed, and promoted by Digital Birmingham, is helping the Council and citizens improve the city.  It has been possible for some time now to contact the council either through the web, or through your TV (if you have Virgin or Sky) to inform the Council of issues that need to be reported.

Recent contacts from the public have included; reporting a dumped car, reporting graffitti, and reporting a traffic light failure.  The new iphone ap. (suitable for iphones/ipads and tablets) allows you to take a photo of the issue causing offence/concern, tag its location and send the information direct to Birmingham City Council.

Since the iphone ap. has been developed, the number of people getting involved and helping to improve their local environments has increased.

If you have an iphone, and know of an issue or problem causing concern in your local area, why not tag it, photograph it and send it in.  If you don’t report it, it won’t get fixed!

If you have friends or relatives who don’t have internet access – if they have Sky

or Virgin digital TV, they can also report issues, request forms and other information such as the disabled ‘blue badge’ , renew library books and even search for jobs through jobcentre plus.

Learn how local lads created a legendary record label 'Creation Records' 27/05/2011

Looking for something different?

A unique showing of the documentary Upside Down which is the fascinating story of Creation, one of the world’s most successful (and colourful) independent record labels, is retold through archival footage, revealing interviews with Creation’s main characters and great music. Founded in 1983 by 23-year-old Alan McGee, Creation was home to some of the most genre-defining bands of the era, including The Jesus and Mary Chain, Super Furry Animals, Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub and, most lucratively, Oasis. A decade after it folded, this film tells it all: the successes, the excesses, the drugs, breakdowns, bankruptcy and bust-ups – the whole wild rock and roll history.

This screening, shown at Wolverhampton’s Light House, will be introduced by a local lad the former director at Creation Records and Tim Abbot and A&R man for the label Chris Abbot, both successful music entrepreneurs and filmmakers – and both born and bread in the Midlands.

“The full extent of the debauchery, precarious nature and genius of the independent label is to be laid bare in the most revealing rock’n’roll

film since 24 Hour Party People…” The Guardian

‘It’s to director Danny O’ Connor’s credit that Upside Down reaches beyond the mania to reveal the tale’s poignant undertow: what happens to friends when their wildest dreams come true’ **** Mojo

“Believe the hype! The simple tale of a legendary label.” **** UNCUT

THE MUSIC:

Following the film, experience the psychedelic sounds of Wolverhampton’s The Partizan Elektra in the courtyard of the historic Chubb Buildings. More info: facebook.com/ThePartizanElektra

Followed by Creation DJ sets from Tim & Chris Abbot, & Sim Spaceman (Sound of Confusion).

Tickets cost: £6.50 in advance / £7 on door. Box Office: 01902 716055 or buy tickets online

Our Facebook Fan Page is now up and running! 26/05/2011

Further to Simon’s blog post a while back (http://www.digitalbirmingham.co.uk/blog/facebook-playing-our-get-out-of-jail-free-card#more-1760), I can happily say that our official Facebook fan page has now been set-up!

Contrary to FB’s help guide, it’s best price cialis impossible (unless Simon and I have missed something??) to create a page from a profile and have all your ‘friends’ automatically filter over and become ‘likes’! So. I’ve de-activated the profile account we have, the one that we shouldn’t have had in the first place and have created a page.

Kindling electronic book publishing in Birmingham 24/05/2011

Local publisher Kate Cooper has done a marvellous job with her New Optimists project. She asked lots of scientists the simple question “What are you optimistic about?” Over 80 of them responded, and what they’ve said has been compiled into the book.

However, when she looked into publishing in Kindle format, Kate couldn’t find a local person or company that could do this for her. So, she contacted us at Digital Birmingham and we agreed to co-produce a workshop. This will be next Wednesday at Aston Business School.

The DigiBIC Project 19/05/2011

The DigitalBIC project looks to provide a platform for SME’s to showcase new technologies/services

to be used by other sectors within the creative industries.

The DigiBIC main objective is to set up a European network to facilitate technologies deployment for the creative sector. The idea is that SMEs would be able to use this platform to showcase new technologies/services that are ready for market but that could be used by other sectors within the creative industries. The network would gather both technologies users and developers which mean researchers, SMEs, industries players would be interested in joining the network.
