A sign of the digital times: Birmingham’s first Digital District

19th October 2009

A lot of background work has been going on over the last few months, ever since Cllr Paul Tilsley (Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council and Chair of the Digital Birmingham Partnership) announced the creation of a Digital District in the heart of Birmingham. A previous blog detailed an event that happened on 14th October at Fazeley Studios, and as always at Digital Birmingham - we like to tell you how it went.

Cllr Tilsley provided the official welcome to the event, attended by national and European policy makers and stakeholders. Some of the highlights from the speech included Birmingham having a £2 billion creative and digital media sector; the city spending £500 million over 10 years in the biggest transformation programme unrivalled anywhere in the UK and the great news that Birmingham is now the best performing city in the UK, moving up seven places in a year on the Cushman & Wakefield study.

There were presentations (which will be put onto the Digital Birmingham website shortly), speakers from Barcelona and Berlin, cities that already have developed digital districts and debates. It was deemed a very successful event, that brought together a mixture of people all involved in the digital arena.

The first phase of the digital district is planned to cover Birmingham Science Park, Eastside and Digbeth and will include the Children’s Hospital and the Law Courts, the wholesale market and Matthew Boulton College.

This blog will be updated with further information about the event, and Birmingham’s Digital District. If you would like to ask any questions about the project, and how it will impact on Birmingham as a city and as part of the wider region - please add your comments below.

Here you will find all the presentations, speeches and final report of the “Developing Birmingham’s Digital District” seminar that took place in October 2009.
