Evangelist for Second Life and virtual worlds arrives!

29th September 2008

Technology giant IBM has paved the way for other businesses by appointing a ‘Metaverse Evangelist’ to promote the usage of Second Life and the range of virtual worlds available to the private sector.

This is not just a selling role, but a way of promoting and focusing on something that an individual is passionate about. It is growing in popularity as more and more businesses conduct meetings in virtual worlds.

Software is quickly overtaking hardware as the business development focus and this includes Second Life and related virtual worlds. As more and more companies are branching out all over the world it is making more sense to get involved in virtual worlds so employees do not have to continuously travel to take part in meetings, conferences and events.

These virtual worlds evangelists will continue to pop up in different businesses and companies as more and more appoint specific posts to concentrate on this aspect. The private sector is moving fast and this is no exception.

Thankyou for picking up on the sky news article. I have been IBMs metaverse evangelist for several years now. It has taken a while for people to start to see past the apparent quirky and game nature of virtual worlds. That is not to say that we dont need that part too.
What has also been interesting is the rise of our eightbar.com brand (named after the IBM eightbar logo) that is really just a few of us in Hursley near winchester wanting to share with the world what we do. That passionate and public sharing across all social media aswell as in virtual worlds shows the power of what is loosely called web2.0.
It is a state of mind that many more organizations will get used to. It is why I became a metaverse evangelist, rather than being appointed :) You start small with some ideas you want to share, share them far and wide and people gather around you.
This whole journey can be found on eightbar going back to about April 2006 and will make a great book one day.
