Multipack: Hack the Planet

12th February 2010

The Multipack is “a community of multi-talented Web professionals from across the West Midlands” who meet every fortnight in the Old Joint Stock.  Paul Lloyd from the group is arranging a hack day as part of his a.green:focus project on Saturday 20th February at One Black Bear, 191 Fazeley Street.

The aim of the day is to

build a Web site or app that encourages Web people like us to think about how we can reduce the size of our carbon footprint, both in the office and on the road.

Paul has provided the following details for the day

## Date
Saturday February 20, 2010 (and possibly Sunday if we decide we need more time)

## Time
Starts at 10am

## Location
The offices of One Black Bear at The Old School House, 191 Fazeley Street, Birmingham

## People
In terms of people who should attend, whilst there will be a number of web designers and programmers who are interested, I’d encourage anybody to come along who has ideas for how we can use the web to encourage people to become greener. Newcomers are certainly welcome, although no spectators–there’s no reason why people can’t chip in, and maybe learn a thing or two in the process!

## Refreshments
Food and drinks will be provided, kindly paid for by the folks at Campaign Monitor

Paul tells me that there has been quite a lot of interest around hacking smart meters which is interesting for us in Digital Birmingham as we have been a part of the DEHEMS ( Digital Environment Home Energy Management System) smart metering project which is about to go into its next phase of pilot in April.

Oh, and on a slight tangent, Alex Wilmer has produced this excellent round up of the Hacker Culture and Geek Groups in the region, which naturally includes Multipack.

Wow! I managed to get this far without making a geek will inherit the earth pun
