People do stress when their internet breaks down!
9th September 2008
It has been proven that people’s stress levels rise when they find that their internet connection is not working, from research been undertaken by You Gov on behalf of 118118. This type of stress has also been given a slightly weird name, “discomgoogolation”, which might get you even more frustrated when you try to pronounce it!
A psychologist has been able to evidence that once internet access is lost, heart rates and brainwave activity can change dramatically. We can all relate to the fact that it is very stressful trying to get the lack of internet access fixed, and this has been found to be part of the problem. Sitting at the end of the phone while you are put through to many different departments at your ISP’s call centre can be extremely frustrating, especially if you need to get back on the internet urgently for work or personal matters.
The You Gov research has also highlighted that over 50% of respondents are on the internet between 1-4 hours per day, although it was not clear whether this was for work or personal use, and a worrying 19% spent more time online than socialising/spending time with their family. Could the internet be the new reason families are interacting less and less, compared to watching TV and going out to the pub for a drink? You decide!
