Open data and mapping – an idea 09/01/2012

Just before Christmas we had an email pop into our Digital Birmingham inbox. It was from somebody who is setting up their own business in Birmingham. They asked us

“I was wondering if Birmingham City Council has a comprehensive list of the city centre postcodes so I could easily upload this to the admin area of my website, so when the customer places an order this will be accepted/rejected depending on the postcode.”

Technology is developing rapidly. Nearly half of our waking hours are spent using media and communications. Broadband is the fourth utility and users’ bandwidth demand grows by 50% each year (Nielsen’s Law).  61% of 15-24 year-olds use social networking…

What is your company doing about this?

If you are a business in Birmingham or the West Midlands conurbation already using email, web sites and the internet and want to find out more about the Government’s approach to Next Generation Access and what this means to your business, then come along to this free morning session and find out how you can:

1) Make better use of technology
2) Obtain the business advantage of fast access
3) Access a global market place
4) Afford the faster connections to enable you to be competitive in a digital age

This event is sponsored by Digital Birmingham, Birmingham & Black Country City Region, Business Birmingham, who are concerned about the area’s digital infrastructure (Digital Districts) and the take-up of broadband by businesses.  They are convinced that future business growth will exploit technology and require increasing speed of connection.

SEO? Bless you! 16/01/2009

I recently went on SEO training, for those who are sick of acronyms or are just curious, this stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is a way to improve the volume and quality of traffic on the internet to your website by learning how to present your pages, and supporting web accessibility as a whole. It has a lot of similarities with online marketing, and the training will usually include overviews of how to improve your online presentation and audience engagement.

Where there’s muck – there’s a blog 15/12/2008

I’m always looking for examples of how social media can support small businesses. I’ve raised the question before using the local builder as an example. Why on earth would the bloke who knocked a hole in my wall have a reason to use any kind of social media tool?

Well I found a partial answer to that in a video from Herefordshire firm, Wiggly Wigglers (amongst other things they sell worms for composting). Founder Heather Gorringe explains how a shift to social media over tradititional media helped cut her advertising costs without cutting her customer base.
