A unique showing of the documentary Upside Down which is the fascinating story of Creation, one of the world’s most successful (and colourful) independent record labels, is retold through archival footage, revealing interviews with Creation’s main characters and great music. Founded in 1983 by 23-year-old Alan McGee, Creation was home to some of the most genre-defining bands of the era, including The Jesus and Mary Chain, Super Furry Animals, Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub and, most lucratively, Oasis. A decade after it folded, this film tells it all: the successes, the excesses, the drugs, breakdowns, bankruptcy and bust-ups – the whole wild rock and roll history.
This screening, shown at Wolverhampton’s Light House, will be introduced by a local lad the former director at Creation Records and Tim Abbot and A&R man for the label Chris Abbot, both successful music entrepreneurs and filmmakers – and both born and bread in the Midlands.
“The full extent of the debauchery, precarious nature and genius of the independent label is to be laid bare in the most revealing rock’n’roll
film since 24 Hour Party People…” The Guardian
