Is MySpace no place?
19/02/2009

Depending on which online resource you trust, MySpace has a differing amount of people who have profiles. According to the BBC it has 83 million users worldwide, however, according to Chris DeWolfe (creator and CEO at MySpace) MySpace actually has 76 million American users and 135 million globally - quite a difference.

MySpace was one of the, along with Friends Reunited, first social networks to be set up. But it differs hugely from those around now e.g. Facebook, Bebo, as its business objective was primarily around revenue generation. That is where Mr DeWolfe highlights MySpace's domination. Mark Zuckerberg (creator of Facebook) and others are still trying to bring in income such as advertising space into Facebook, and it may be a much tougher transition as one of the pulls of creating a Facebook profile was the fact that the user would not be bombarded with advertising and competitions. With the slow introduction of advertising onto Facebook, it is leading a lot of people to de-activate their accounts.

However, the number of users cannot be ignored and MySpace is seen as one of the "old timers" when it comes to online socialising. Many young people are not using it any more, due to the fact they have switched allegiancies to another social network.

The internet changes and evolves at a tremendous rate therefore it does not take long for a new creation, like a social network, to be old news. Even Facebook is seeing a plateau in the number of people joining, and Twitter is biting at its heels to become the next "big thing".
