As part of the Advantage West Midlands 'LUCID' demonstrator projects Digital Birmingham in partnership with Birmingham City University have delivered an innovative application which has allowed users to receive location specific services and information via a mobile device.

To demonstrate the real benefits of the technology, rich media content was delivered through the City's free information zone, birminghamfiz and pushed out to the mobile device as it came in proximity of the fiz wi-fi node.

The content created by Clever Cherry, included a piece of music that got louder as the user approached Symphony Hall, a funky video linked to 'What's on" at the Birmingham Academy, information on how to get half price pies from the Urban Pie shop and details of cheap rates at the Copthorne Hotel.

The aim is for this demonstrator, to act as a catalyst to businesses so that they can explore the potential of this technology for delivering their service offerings to individuals relevant to their location and situation that they are in. For instance it could be used to target visitors coming into the city with meal deal offers, shopping vouchers or discounted tickets to events and concerts as well as enhancing the visitor experience with tourist information on their surroundings that will help them explore and get the most from their time in the city.

Working with partners who have the technical know-how, creative skills and marketing expertise, this demonstrator shows what can be achieved through this exciting medium.

Birmingham City Council Deputy Leader Councillor Paul Tilsley, who chairs the Digital Birmingham partnership is excited by the opportunities this offers businesses in Birmingham: "This is a brilliant and powerful example of the capabilities that digital technologies can deliver. Attractive propositions and services can be offered to individuals that will add value to their time in the city and enhance their city life experience."
