Be Birmingham's bid for funding to help 2000 of the city's young
unemployed people into work has won approval from central government.

The aim of Birmingham's Future Jobs Fund programme is to provide 1000 placements for 18 to 24-year-olds who have been claiming benefits for a year or more. A further 1000 placements will be created for long-term benefit claimants over 25 in unemployment hotspots across Birmingham. The training will be in the public, voluntary and community and private sectors in skills areas relevant to the local economy.

The Future Jobs Fund is a fund of around £1 billion to support the creation of jobs for long term unemployed young people and others who face significant disadvantage in the labour market.

The pre-employment training programme will begin in October and will last six months, providing work for 30 hours per week. To enable the participants to obtain a qualification as part of the initiative, they will take part in training through an accredited provider.
