Central Government goes virtual
26/02/2009
These 'virtual embassies' will be interactive websites, including an external page for the public providing basic information on the country or region and links to consular and visa services, either provided by a call centre or online.
The FCO have explained that this is a trial project that is not yet live, but that it is planning to make the Maldives the site for the first virtual embassy. Other possible locations are Honduras, Kyrgyzstan and Madagascar.
The 'virtual' embassies will not only be used to engage with foreign communities, but local communities as well. Community engagement will lead a lot of the work including blogs, video conferences and discussion forums. The interactive embassies will also enable more FCO staff to benefit from remote and mobile working, due to the potential ability to log into the embassies to carry out their work wherever they are posted in the world.
