Infrastructure support for City of London from our City Region
28/04/2009
Birmingham City Council, Telford & Wrekin Council, Coventry City Council and Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council are leading the West Midlands push around the City Region becoming the back office for the City of London.
The project could prove essential to attract inward investment, increase business competitiveness and get the job market moving in the right direction. This was highlighted at the Next Gen Roadshow in Birmingham on 22nd April, organised by the Community Broadband Network.
The ICT hub at the £400 million Walsall Gigaport development could be the prime location for infrastructive and back office support to the City of London business area, rather than this support being based at Canary Wharf which will mean the costs are much higher.
However, our City Region is up against strong competitors such as Paris, who is looking to place itself as the next generation broadband base for businesses. If a next generation broadband platform using fibre optic technology was created, businesses would have speeds of up to 120 times faster than they are used to.
