New Lord Mayor Webcasts to the Nation
10/06/2008
In a marriage between one of Birmingham's most ancient offices and one of the most modern of digital technologies, the new Lord Mayor of Birmingham will be taking part in a live 'Day in The Life of...' webcast on Wednesday 25th June.
Cllr. Chauhdry Rashid, who was appointed Lord Mayor in May, will be questioned by students from St John Wall Catholic School in Handsworth as part of 'Get into Digital - a month of digital activities running throughout June and organised by Digital Birmingham.
The students will be posing questions submitted to the Lord Mayor by the general public and the session, which is due to go live at 11.10am on Wednesday 25th June, will be streamed live on www.getintodigital.co.uk and via the Birmingham Grid for Learning (www.bgfl.org) as well as being available for download after the event.
"Cllr Rashid will be answering questions on a range of issues - his civic duties, his career, his favourite holiday or what he likes best for breakfast - anything the public have asked him," said Chris Price, director of Digital Birmingham, the organisation charged with ensuring that the benefits of digital technology are available to all in the city. "It's a reflection of the superb level of political support the council's digital initiatives are receiving that the Lord Mayor has agreed to this historic webcast as one of his first activities in his new post. We're sure there will be some interesting questions and answers."
Cllr Rashid said: "The thought of being in the hot seat for a range of questions from Birmingham's citizens is most daunting, but the way in which people - especially the young - are embracing digital technologies to become involved in local democracy is very encouraging for the future.
"I encourage everyone who can get involved with the 'Get into Digital' to do so because the benefits of digital technologies are great for a city like Birmingham which is looking to become one of the world's leading digital cities."
There's still chance to put a question to the Lord Mayor by emailing digital@servicebirmingham.co.uk or texting DIGITAL plus the question to 07786 200403 by Monday 23rd June. All questions chosen will receive a 1GB memory stick and be entered into a draw to win a digital camera.
