Twitter's ranking among other social networks has soared as of January 2009, and there is no sign of it slowing down. Its importance and relevance was proved after the New York plane crash into the Hudson River earlier in the month.

The first photograph of the incident was posted by a New Yorker with a Twitter profile, and it was downloaded by professional broadcasters as their cameramen had not caught up with the plane before the "twitpic" was posted.

The newly inaugarated President of the United States, Barack Obama, has the most followers on Twitter, with over 144,000. This will no doubt increase as the momentum of his leadership heightens and raise the profile of Twitter along with it.
