DISCOVER-Digital Inclusion Skills for Carers bringing Opportunities, Value and Excellence
Digital Birmingham is leading the DISCOVER project, which is being grant funded by the European Competitiveness and Innovation ICT Policy Support Programme (CIP-ICT-PSP). The focus will be on developing digital skills and competencies of carers of the elderly. The project will run from 1 April 2012 - 31 March 2015.
What is DISCOVER?
DISCOVER aims to improve the digital skills of home carers of the elderly; supporting communication ability, self-learning and support through accessing web based learning. This will be achieved by piloting support through on-line tools and services as well as targeted distance training and certification of competences. The expected impact is an improved quality of life of the carers and cared for. We will engage 100 carers in the Birmingham area to pilot the new learning materials. We are working with the following partners to achieve this:
- Birmingham City Council
- Birmingham City University
- Coventry University Enterprises Ltd - Health Design and Technology Institute
- The Open University
- Aristotle University of Thessalonica
- Fundacio Privada CETEMMSA
- Fundacion INTRAS
- Astra-Com
- Dundalk Institute of Technology, CASALA Centre
The project will focus mainly on informal learning and will explore how links to qualifications and accreditation can be made.
Who are the target users?
The project will pilot the new learning materials with 100 carers of elderly people who provide support in the home. The majority of carers (75) will be from an informal background i.e. relatives, friends or volunteers and 25 will be professionals.
It will also engage with care training providers, home care providers and carer organisations that connect to carers.
