Hello Digital Week 2010

Birmingham - A leading digital city, 2010

Reinventing itself as the city of a 1000 digital trades, Birmingham celebrated its digital and technological achievements alongside the best in the world that is making Birmingham the place for investment and business growth and enabling change for the way that we live, learn and work in the 21st century.

During Autumn 2010, Birmingham hosted and organised a series of successful linked events to profile the digital credentials of the city. It has opened up the debate on the impact of digital technologies across the broadest cross section of industries from the public sector, government, health, and education through to media companies, professional services, creatives, arts organisations and SMEs.

The events listed in the timeline below were all part of the Hello Digital 2010 programme and activities.

Hello Digital Week

  1. Say Hello!Say Hello, a year long public participatory programme showcased as part of the Hello Digital week has engaged with over 1,900 participants and reflected the themes of digital participation, inclusion and skill development. It supported the Our Digital City project, an online snapshot of Birmingham in 2010, celebrating the people, places and events that make the city great.

    Other projects commissioned include Retooled looking at the role social media and digital technology can play for people affected by redundancy), Kahani (showcased at the Beyond 2010 Gala Dinner and shortlisted for the Screen WM conceived Digital SocialResponsibility Award at Birmingham Black International Film Festival Music Video and Screen Awards), Urban Legends, Film Dash, News Dash and First Email.

    Additional fringe activities were events such 4AM, How to Animate Your Own Vegetables, 3G to 3D Storytelling.

  2. Eurocities Logo

    EUROCITIES is a membership organisation for European cities with a population of more than 400,000. It has a number of Forums (Knowledge Society, Social Affairs, Environment, Economy, Mobility, Culture and Cooperation).

    Digital Birmingham represents Birmingham City Council on the Knowledge Society Forum (KSF) and attends the eInclusion and Smart Cities working groups.

    KSF organises quarterly events, which are hosted by the member cities. Birmingham was given the opportunity to host the 2010 Autumn Event on 19th &20th October,which was well visited by over 90 delegates from 22 European countries.

  3. Beyond 2010

    The two conference days combined shared keynotes from leading policy makers, thought leaders and innovators with a series of streamed workshops and best practice case studies, enabling delegates to focus on key issues of specific relevance to their organisational challenges and demonstrate what is possible for those willing to embrace change.

  4. Hello BusinessHello Business was an annual 2-day conference which offered insight, advice and support from a network of leading experts, helping businesses better understand how to make the most of digital technologies, giving knowledge and tools to reach the next level.

    Suitable for experts and beginners alike, the eclectic schedule featured business master classes, digital surgeries, cutting edge workshops, pitch training and a Hello Business Marketplace.

    • Evaluation of the event indicated all attendees were 89% satisfied
    • 86% would return again
    • Most people improved their knowledge of digital

    Planning for Hello Digital 2011 ias underway with all possible funding streams being explored.
